God created the heavens and the earth in six literal days. On the seventh day, he rested or ceased from all his work. God set apart the seventh day for rest. This was an example for the Nation of Israel. There is no account of man observing the sabbath before the Nation of Israel. God commanded the Jews to keep the sabbath holy. The children of Israel could do no work on the sabbath, nor could their servants or their animals. It was a perpetual covenant between God and Israel.
So, if you want to know when the sabbath day begins, you must look at the Jewish calendar. Their calendar is slightly different from the American calendar. We know the sabbath falls on the seventh day of the week, but when does the new day begin? According to the Jews, the new day begins when the sun goes down, or six o'clock PM. So the sabbath begins on Friday when the sun goes down.
Many Christians mistakenly believe that the sabbath falls on Sunday, because most Christians go to church on Sunday. But the reason Christians go to church on Sunday is because the resurrection happened on a Sunday. The number seven is synonymous with the sabbath. There was more than one sabbath the Jews had to keep. For instance, they could not farm their fields every seven years, they had to let the ground rest. Christians are not bound by the sabbath.
